Decided to try translating the Fushigi Yuugi songs today! I'm taking the JLPT tomorrow, so hopefully this has somehow helped me, haha. This is actually fairly difficult to translate, just because the structure of the sentences are so flow-y and not at all about forming direct thoughts. Great song though!

And all at once, my eyes seem to open
If we go on this way, no good can come of it…
Meeting you again by chance
In a crowd of people, you can only see
Girls with similar hair as me
You are clearly looking for somone
Could it be your beloved?
But the moment our eyes met I realized it was me
There's no way, it can't be You started running toward me
The fuse of my throbbing heartbeat
Starts running through my body
I can't fall to pieces this way
So I must keep myself level-headed
But, you know… Today is a bit…
I feel like a lost kitten
If you come at me kindly,
I can't help but follow you Meow
That story of yours, by so many degrees
Is really too similar
To the lines you were telling me
In the middle of the dream I had last night
The chances of loving and being loved are like sand grains
"But those grains are me," you said
The fuse of my throbbing heartbeat
Sends me into tingles, and I burn up
I need to blow out the flame soon
Or else I'll definitely get hurt one day
But just a bit more… Just the slightest bit more…
I want to become closer just like this
Even if I can't reach out to touch your hand
And all at once, I can't hold you Meow
But the moment our eyes met I realized it was me
There's no way, it can't be You started running toward me
The fuse of my throbbing heartbeat
Starts running through my body
I can't fall to pieces this way
So I try to keep myself level-headed
But, you know… Today is a bit…
I feel like a lost kitten
If you come at me kindly,
I can't help but follow you Meow
NOTES:
1. I've seen the title translated as "Fuse of Excitement," but tokimeki more accurately refers to how fast your heart beats when you're excited, rather than a generic excitement. I wanted to capture that.
2. I kept going back and forth on the first two lines. Because of "anata," I know the singer is calling out to somone, but I don't know whose eyes are opening. I went with the singer's eyes, so the image in my brain is that she's calling out to someone in a dream and then waking up.
3. The "demo (but)" in the pre-chorus is attached to the second half of the line, but I put the english in the first half for clarity.
4. "Demo chotto / kyou wa chotto" and "demo sukoshi / honno sukoshi" are all incomplete thoughts that imply some sort of uncertainty.
5. I had to flip the order of so many lines in the second stanza. You can imagine this was hell to understand line by line. Haha.
6. I thought long and hard about "omoi omoware sae," which can also be translated to, "Thinking of someone and having them think of you." Omoi is a very, uhh, general word. And the likelihood of grains. Don't get me started.
7. "Te ni mofure / rarenai no ni" was interesting structure-wise! If you take just the first half of the line by itself, it's "I can touch your hand," but the second half is a verb conjugation meaning "not be able to." GRAMMAR TWIST!
